Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.
Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Economics.
These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.
Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.
ABORIGINAL GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN ECONOMICS
A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an Aboriginal Graduate student entering the Department of Economics. If there is no eligible Graduate Student then the scholarship will be awarded to an Aboriginal Undergraduate Student entering the Department of Economics.
KENNETH L. AVIO HONOURS MEDAL
A medal is awarded to the student in the Department of Economics for the most outstanding Honours Thesis.
THE DR. LEO BAKONY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $500 is awarded to a student entering year four of a Major or Honours B.Sc. in Economics. Selection is based on academic performance in courses that fulfill the statistics requirements for the degree.
* THE DR. GORDON BERTRAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a third or fourth year student in the Department of Economics who is proficient in the study of Canadian Economic History, or in one of the courses that may be substituted for it to fulfill the Canadian Economic History requirement, if Canadian Economic History is not taught.
HAROLD G. CRAVEN SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships of not less than $1,000 are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate 4th year students in the Department of Economics or the Faculty of Business who intend to pursue a career as a Chartered Account.
* THE GEORGE HAMILTON HARMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Two scholarships of $237 each, made available by Miss Emily A. Harman of Toronto in memory of her late brother, are awarded for proficiency in money and banking or in Economics.
COLIN JONES MEDAL IN CANADIAN PUBLIC POLICY
A medal is awarded to a student in the Department of Economics who achieves academic excellence in the study of Canadian Public Policy.
DANA KINGSTONE SCHOLARSHIP IN ECONOMICS
A scholarship of $500 is awarded to an academically outstanding 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student in the Department of Economics who shows promise or potential in financial economics.
LEONARD LAUDADIO MEDAL IN ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMICS
A medal is awarded to the student in the Department of Economics who achieves academic excellence in the study of Environmental Economics.
THE DOUGLAS PURVIS MEMORIAL ESSAY PRIZE IN ECONOMICS
A prize of $1,000 is awarded to the student who submits the best paper to a third or fourth year Economics course. Papers are nominated by the instructors of eligible courses. A Departmental Committee comprising instructors of eligible courses selects the winning paper.
