- Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

A bursary is awarded to a student continuing in the Department of History or the Department of Geography.

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in a major or honours program in the Department of History.

Bursaries are awarded to female undergraduate or graduate students studying Canadian or British History in the Department of History. Preference will be given to students who have a connection with the Saanich Peninsula.
MARY & ALLAN STUBBS MEMORIAL BURSARY
Value: $500 | Number: 1
A bursary of $500 is awarded to an undergraduate student in an Honours or Major degree program in English literature or in British History.
ELSIE G. TURNBULL BURSARY IN BRITISH COLUMBIA HISTORY

An award will be made annually to a student who has successfully completed at least one year of studies and is registered in a course in the history of British Columbia the following year.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of History.
These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.
Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.
* THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS NICHOLAS ABKHAZI BOOK PRIZE IN RUSSIAN HISTORY
A book prize is awarded to the student who writes the best essay dealing with some aspect of Russian History related to the reign of Tsar Alexander II.
* THE KATHLEEN AGNEW SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded for the purpose of stimulating the study of the History of Canada.
AIR FORCE OFFICERS' ASSOCIATION BOOK PRIZE
A book prize is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who has written the best essay or thesis on Air Force history in the Department of History. In the case of an undergraduate award, selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History. In the case of a graduate award, selection will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of History.
* THE TATTON ANFIELD PRIZE IN AMERICAN HISTORY
Two book prizes are awarded to outstanding students enrolled in one or more senior level undergraduate courses in either 20th century American history or American diplomatic history.
* THE ALEXANDER MacLEOD BAIRD MEMORIAL PRIZE IN SCOTTISH HISTORY
A prize is awarded to the student in the Department of History who writes the best essay on a topic in Scottish
History. The award has been established by Mrs. A. MacLeod Baird in memory of her husband who was very interested in the role played by the Scots in Canada's history.
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students demonstrating excellence in a course(s) related to Military History in the Department of History.
* KEN COATES BOOK PRIZE
A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in a history course devoted to First Nations studies.
* THE LIEUTENANT-GENERAL S.F. CLARK, CBE CD SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a student of high academic standing in three units of senior undergraduate or graduate course work (or equivalent) dealing with military history or defence studies given in the Department of History or the Department of Political Science. Selection of the winner will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History or the Department of Political Science.
* THE MAUREEN DOBBIN SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to the student in a Major or Honours program in History who best combines academic
excellence with contributions to the University and/or the community. Nomination forms for this scholarship are available from the Department of History and must be submitted by April 15.
* HELEN JESSOP FORD SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a student continuing in the Department of History or the Department of Geography.
* THE CHARLOTTE S.M. GIRARD BOOK PRIZE IN FRENCH HISTORY
A book prize is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolled in a French history course. The prize is given in recognition of Professor Girard's contribution as a former teacher in the Department of History.
* J. WALTER GRANT BOOK PRIZE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA HISTORY
A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student in a senior course devoted to British Columbia history. The award is
made by the Victoria Carnarvon Club in memory of J. Walter Grant.
* THE GROTIUS AWARD IN MODERN HISTORY
An annual award is to be given for the best Honours graduating essay in British or European History. If no suitable essay is presented, no award will be made. Should the graduating essay cease to be a requirement of the Honours program, the award may be given to the student writing the best graduate thesis in British or European History. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards or the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies upon the recommendation of the Department of History.
* HARPER SCHOLARSHIP IN HISTORY
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in a Major or Honours program in History, with a strong preference for students with a demonstrated commitment to World History.
* THE HENDRICKSON PRIZE IN B.C. HISTORY
A prize is awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in year four of a major or honours program in History. Preference is given to a student specializing in the history of British Columbia.
* THE HUTCHINSON BOOK PRIZE
A prize is awarded to an undergraduate studying the History of the Canadian West. Preference will be given to a student
who writes an excellent essay dealing with some aspect of the settlement of immigrants from the United Kingdom in Alberta and/or British Columbia during the period from 1900 to 1940.
* THE WILLARD E. IRELAND SCHOLARSHIP IN HISTORY
A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student who has completed third year and is in a Major or Honours
program in History. Preference will be given to a student specializing in Canadian History.
A prize is awarded to an outstanding first or second year student in an introductory course in British History.
* THE DR. TOBY JACKMAN BOOK PRIZE IN BRITISH HISTORY
A book prize is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolled in an advanced course in British History. This
prize is established by Dr. Jackman's colleagues on the occasion of his retirement from the University.
LEON J. LADNER B.C. HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to the best undergraduate student studying the History of British Columbia.
* THE LADNER BOOK PRIZE FOR THE STUDY OF THE HISTORY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student of the History of British Columbia.
A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student in Canadian History. The prize is given in recognition of Professor Loft's contribution as a former teacher in the Department of History.
* THE PROFESSOR ALFRED E. LOFT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding second year student who enrolls in a major or honours program in Canadian
History.
* THE LORD SELKIRK ASSOCIATION OF RUPERT'S LAND (VICTORIA BRANCH) - BOMPAS BOOK PRIZE
A prize is awarded to a student in the Department of History who is enrolled in a course on the history of the Selkirk Settlers or early Western Canadian History. Preference will be given to a student enrolled in a course on Early Canadian History in Manitoba.
* THE ALLAN AND ELIZABETH McKINNON SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a senior student of high academic standing engaged in a Major or Honours program in Canadian history who would find it difficult to resume studies without financial aid.
* THE MAJOR-GENERAL G.R. PEARKES, VC, SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a student in the Department of History with the highest standing in three units of third or fourth year courses dealing with military history or defence studies. Courses eligible for consideration in any year will be identified in the History Department Handbook.
* THE SYDNEY G. PETTIT BOOK PRIZE IN EUROPEAN HISTORY
A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student in European history. The prize is given in recognition of Professor Pettit's teaching and administrative contributions to the Department of History.
* THE R.H. ROY SCHOLARSHIP IN MILITARY HISTORY
A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolled in a military history course. The award is given in recognition of Professor Roy's contribution as a former teacher in the Department of History.
ROYAL UNITED SERVICES INSTITUTE OF VANCOUVER ISLAND BOOK PRIZE IN MILITARY HISTORY
Book prizes to the total value of $75 are awarded to the two students with the highest academic standing in each of the
Canadian and European Military History courses. The two winners and the prizes will be selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Professor teaching the two undergraduate military history courses involved.
* THE NORAH LUGRIN SHAW AND WENDELL BURRILL SHAW MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to the student of History who writes the best essay dealing with the Magna Carta, the
Petition of Rights and the Bill of Rights as the Fountainhead of Constitutional Liberties.
UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS ASSOCIATION OF CANADA (VICTORIA BRANCH) SCHOLARSHIP IN CANADIAN HISTORY
A scholarship of $100 is awarded to an outstanding student of Canadian History in a senior level course.
* VICTORIA MUNICIPAL CHAPTER, IODE CANADIAN HISTORY SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in Canadian History in any year.
VICTORIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate 4th year student studying Canadian History in the Department of History. Preference will be given to a student studying BC History.
WHA'99 SCHOLARSHIP IN WORLD HISTORY
The WHA' 99 Scholarship in World History commemorates the Eighth Annual World History Association Conference in June, 1999 hosted by the University of Victoria. A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a graduate student continuing in the Department of History who has written an outstanding essay in world history submitted for course work over the preceding academic year. Preference will be given to essays on the history of Asia, Africa, Oceania, Latin America or on internationally comparative topics. If no graduate student is eligible then up to two scholarships of $500 each will be awarded to a third or fourth year undergraduate student in the Department of History. Essays on the aforementioned topics written in a students second, third or fourth year may be considered as a basis for selection. A graduate award will be made by the Graduate Studies Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of History. An undergraduate award will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.
*TED AND JANE WOOLEY SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a student in American History who intends to continue in the History Majors or Honours Program.
