Questions and Answers: Admission and Registration

New Students

I have never attended UVic before, how do I apply?
Apply on the Web at http://registrar.uvic.ca.

An application is required from all new undergraduate students applying for admission. The application fee is nonrefundable and not applicable to tuition fees. Applications submitted without this fee will not be processed. See below for the appropriate fee required:

$60 If all transcripts come from institutions within Canada or if applying to attend UVic on a Letter of Permission.

$100 If any transcripts come from institutions outside of Canada or if applying to attend UVic on a Letter of Permission.

When should I apply?
As early as possible. See Deadlines.

I’m a visiting student - how do I apply?
The same as any other student, except that the institution to which you are planning to transfer the credit must forward a “Letter of Permission” to Undergraduate Admissions.

Is there anything else I need to send?
Arrange to have two official transcripts from your secondary school, and two official transcripts from any postsecondary institutions sent by the issuing institution directly to Undergraduate Admissions, University of Victoria, PO Box 3025 STN CSC, Victoria, BC V8W 3P2.

If I am admitted to UVic for the first time in Summer Session and I plan to continue at UVic in the Fall, do I need to do anything to ensure that I am able to register in Fall courses?
No, new students registered in Summer Session will normally be authorized to register automatically for Winter Session.

Current Students

I currently am enrolled in courses at the University of Victoria — do I have to apply to take courses in Summer Session 2012?
All students registered in either Winter Session 2011-2012 (except those who withdrew) for Summer Session 2011 have been automatically authorized (those who graduated in November 2011), provided they are eligible to continue.

I am authorized to register in Summer Session 2012 but I have been required to withdraw from UVic following the Winter Session 2011-2012. Can I register for Summer Session courses?
Students who are required to withdraw will not be eligible for Summer Session registration. Authorization or registration will be cancelled and courses will be dropped automatically. Undergraduate Records will initiate a credit of Summer Session fees, if necessary.

Can I register for Summer Session 2012 courses if I was placed on probation at the end of the Winter Session 2011-2012?
Yes, you can register for 2012 Summer Session courses. You will be on University Probation for the Summer Session and will need to clear this probation status by achieving a 2.00 or better GPA (projected or final) in the 2012 Summer Session before you will be eligible to register for the 2012–2013 Winter Session.

Returning Students

I have been away from studies at UVic and am applying to re-register for Summer 2012. I also want to continue in Winter Session 2012-2013. Do I need to submit a Re-registration Application for the Winter Session?
You will not need to complete an application for Winter Session. You will automatically be authorized to register in winter 2012-2013 just as all students newly admitted to UVic in Summer will be authorized for Winter.

How many units must I be registered in to be considered full-time?
An undergraduate registered in 6.0 or more units in Summer Session (May- August) is considered to be a Full-Time student.

When does Registration begin?
Registration begins March 27. Your registration date and time will be randomly assigned within your year level. To enable students to gain faster access to registration the number of students eligible to register each day is limited.

How will I know when I can register?
During the second week of March you will be sent an email advising you to check www.uvic.ca/mypage under Student Services, Registration Status for your assigned registration date and time.

Do I need to register on the assigned date and time?
You are advised to register on your assigned date and time. You are eligible to access registration at any time after your assigned date and time too. Please do not try to register before your assigned date and time as you will be denied access to registration.

How do I check on my course registration?
Go to www.uvic.ca/mypage

How do I calculate the fee reduction dates and academic drop dates for courses with a non-standard start/ stop date?
See Non-Standard Course Dates

How do I get my money back if, after registration, I find I cannot attend the University of Victoria?
Please read the section concerning “Course Changes/Adds & Drops” and the “Fee Reductions” section.
