The Department of Linguistics and the Division of Continuing Studies, in cooperation with the En’owkin Centre in Penticton, offer a 13.5 unit Certificate Program for people interested in and working with the preservation and revitalization of endangered Aboriginal languages.
The program develops both knowledge and practical strategies to support language revitalization activities for individuals and communities. Participants come from a range of backgrounds, including including teachers, language instructors, elders, program and policy developers and managers, community advocates, and community members interested in contributing to the revitalization of their language and culture. Participants come from across British Columbia and as far away as Nunavut, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories, and learn from one another as well as from experienced instructors and resource people.
The program is delivered using a range of options designed to maximize accessibility, including short intensive and community-based courses, institutes and distance education. The program can also be developed to be delivered for a cohort through community-based partnership arrangements. Courses can be taken on an individual basis or towards the Certificate program, or another program with departmental approval.
Applications to this innovative 13.5-unit program are accepted year round. You complete 9.0 units (6 courses) of required core courses that build your foundation of knowledge and skills, and select 4.5 units (3 courses) of elective courses based on personal and community interest.
