The purpose of the Collaboration for Academic Education in Nursing is to educate nurses to work with individuals, families, groups or communities from a health promotion perspective and an ethic of caring. The CAEN curriculum is based on a philosophy which reflects a commitment to implement a phenomenological and socially critical curriculum which considers the changing health care needs of our society. The philosophy is considered to be alive and evolving. Emerging from the philosophy is the metaconcept of caring. Caring is understood as the attitude and activity of nursing, and is considered in every nursing course.
Changing concepts of health care are creating a new awareness of the contribution nursing can and will make to the professional health care system. In this challenging quest for improved quality in nursing, continuing education is essential.
The University of Victoria School of Nursing has responded to this need by offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing via distance education. This program, accredited by the Canadian Association of University Schools of Nursing, enables Registered Nurses across Canada and the USA, to complete the degree while remaining in their community.
Delivery of courses is facilitated through multimedia design of print, audio CD/ DVD, teleconferencing and a web-based course management system. Students must have access to the internet and email for the duration of the program. Students are permitted up to six years to complete the degree.
