TC evaluation instructions |
- Unit Values
The unit value of a transfer course is calculated from the units/credits on a student transcript and is based on the UVic system of 39 contact hours per 1.5 units. Lab courses do not receive credit at UVic and consequently do not receive additional credit when transferring. Likewise, courses without labs do not receive lower credit values than lecture-only courses. If a transfer course is similar to a UVic course, yet lacks an essential lab component, the unit value should remain as stated on the evaluation form (usually 1.5 or 3.0). Non-specific credit (i.e., level credit) may be applied in such circumstances.
- Specific Credit
The transfer course has a specific match at UVic.
- Level Credit
When a transfer course does not have a specific match at UVic and/or the transfer course does not include a lab that is required by a UVic course, level credit may be assigned. Please do not change unit values: labs are considered in the assessment of course content, as opposed to course value.
- Partial Credit
Partial credit is assigned to transfer courses that carry a unit-value that is exactly half the UVic specific equivalent, and consequently only half of the course content has been converted.
For example:
Transfer course value = 1.5 (one term)
Content is similar to UVic PHYS 102 (3.0)
UVic Transfer Credit = UVic PHYS 102 Partial Credit (1.5)
- Combining Courses
When combining courses for credit, indicate what credit if any,is to be awarded if less than, or more than, the combined combination is presented by a student.
- Exemptions
If a course does not include a lab but its lecture component matches a UVic course, please consider if a transfer student may be exempt from taking that particular UVic course. If not, simply assign level credit. If the absence of the lab does not affect a student’s ability to pursue higher-level courses, a note may be added to the evaluation.
