Sessional GPA Calculation
Undergraduates who fail to obtain a sessional grade point average of at least 2.00 will be placed on academic probation for the next session attended. See Calendar "STANDING" for detailed information.
In calculating the sessional grade point average, the following procedure is used:
- Multiply Grade Point by Registered Unit Value for each course and add to obtain the total Course Points.
- Divide the total Course Points by the total of Registered Unit Values to obtain the Sessional Grade Point Average.
(Disregard COM and INP courses in total Registered Units).
EXAMPLE:
GPA = TOTAL COURSE POINTS/TOTAL REGISTERED UNITS

With the exception of the COM and INP courses, the sessional grade point average is based ONLY on courses which have a
REGISTERED UNIT VALUE. (i.e. LING099 is graded but does not carry any registered unit value).
A duplicate (DUP) or mutually-exclusive (M/X) course is included in the sessional grade point average calculation.
- Originally graded as "DEF" changed to C+. The grade obtained on a DEFERRED examination will be used in CALCULATING the sessional grade point average. If a deferred examination is not written, the final grade for the course becomes N.
- Courses bearing the grade COM may or may not be assigned credit. The COM grade is IGNORED in the calculation of the sessional grade point average.
- Any passing grade obtained on a SUPPLEMENTAL EXAMINATION will be shown in the students academic record with a
grade point value of 1, corresponding to a D, and will be taken into account in the determination of the graduating
average and the class of degree, but WILL NOT AFFECT THE SESSIONAL GRADE POINT AVERAGE.
- Courses bearing the grade INP are also IGNORED in the sessional grade point average calculation.
Graduating GPA Calculation
The graduating average of a student in a bachelor’s degree program (other than BEng, BSEng, and Law) will be determined as the weighted average of the grade values assigned to 300 and 400 level (and in Education 700 level) courses (other than COM-graded courses) taken or challenged at UVic. Courses at the 500 level may be included in the graduating average if they are accepted as credit towards the undergraduate degree.
A course which has been used to satisfy the requirements for one degree, or which has been used in the calculation of the student’s graduating average for one degree, cannot be used for credit towards another degree.

In calculating the graduating grade point average, the following procedure is used:
- Multiply Grade Point by Registered (not awarded) Unit Value for each senior course, then add Course Points to obtain the total Course Points.
- Divide the total Course Points by the total of Registered Unit Values to obtain the Graduating Grade Point Average.
(Disregard COM and INP courses in total Registered Units.)
Total Course Points / Total Number of Registered Units = Graduating Grade Point Average
183/42 = 4.36 Grad GPA
Generic Grade Conversion Guide
NOTE: Unofficial Generic Undergraduate Grade Conversion Guide - For Information Only
The University of Victoria operates on a 9 point/letter grade scale. There is no standardized percentage/letter grade equivalency scale used at UVic. (The grading scale in effect for each Uvic course is communicated to the student, by the instructor, at the start of the session.)
Students who are considering transferring to another institution frequently inquire how the UVic grading scale converts to a 4 point or percentage grading scale. This conversion guide is provided for information only and is being made available to assist students who are considering transferring to an institution that operates on the percent scale or one of the 4 point scales. The determination of the grade conversion of UVic grades is the sole responsibility of the receiving institution. Students who are considering transferring to another institution should consult that institution if further detail regarding grade conversion is required.
Note: The percentage/letter grade equivalencies noted below do not represent percentage/letter grade equivalencies used at UVic.
