Information for New Undergraduate Students

Course Registration

Admission and course registration are two separate procedures. The Admission Package contains important information for all students registering for the first time. This package includes:

  • Your official Letter of Admission to the University.
  • A statement of transfer credit if applicable. Retain all copies.

Note: Admission to the University does not guarantee registration in any course or program.

Acceptance Deposit
To confirm acceptance of an offer of admission, all undergraduate students who are admitted for the first time to take credit courses at the University of Victoria, must submit an acceptance deposit of $200. Tuition Fees must process this acceptance deposit 24 hours before the students plans to access online registration. Failure to submit the acceptance deposit by the deadline specified in the Letter of Admission may result in the cancellation of the offer of admission.

This $200 deposit is required from all new undergraduate students only, regardless of any loan, scholarship or sponsorship arrangements. It will be applied to your tuition fee account, but is forfeited if you withdraw or do not register. If the deposit payment is returned NSF, registration is cancelled.

You may pay your deposit through your bank with telephone or online banking by establishing the University of Victoria as the payee, with your student number as the account number. If you prefer to make your deposit payment by mail, please, make the payment to the University of Victoria, include your student number and the session (i.e. 2010 Summer Session, 2010/2011 Winter Session) on the front of the payment and mail it to:

Co-operative Education Program
New students interested in the Co-op Program should contact either the Office of the Executive Director, Co-operative Education Program or the Department Co-op Coordinator for their area of interest. Visit www.coop.uvic.ca for complete details.

Conditional Admission
If you have been granted conditional admission you must arrange to have the outstanding items listed in your provisional Letter of Admission sent to Undergraduate Admissions, as soon as possible. Review your conditional acceptance letter for a list of any outstanding documentation required by the University.
Students who are provisionally admitted to UVic will not be authorized to reregister for the next session if the required documentation has not been submitted.

Transfer Credit Information
Recognized transfer credit is shown by UVic course number and UVic unit value only. Grades obtained elsewhere in transfer courses are not included in the assignment of transfer credit or in the calculation of the UVic sessional Grade Point Average.

Visiting Students/Letter of Permission
Students enrolled in a degree program at another institution who wish to take credit courses at UVic for transfer back to their home institution must submit a Letter of Permission from their home institution. Normally, such study is limited to a maximum of 15.0 units.

Students who have been admitted on a Letter of Permission as a Visiting Student from a College or other institution offering only first and second year courses shall not be permitted to register in third and fourth year courses at the University of Victoria. (This does not apply to students who are studying under the UVic/College Partnership agreement.)

Visiting students (excluding International Exchange in Law and Business) will be authorized to reregister for future sessions until the 15 unit maximum registration limit has been reached provided the academic sessional standing is satisfied.

Visiting students who wish to become regular degree students must meet all the prevailing admission requirements. For more information contact Undergraduate Admissions and Records.
